Steering MOT failures

Steering failures are less common than suspension, but a higher share of them are serious – a failed steering joint means losing control.

What the tester checks

  • Free play at the steering wheel rim – movement before the road wheels respond
  • Track rod ends and inner joints – wear, security, split dust covers
  • Steering rack or box – security, leaks, rack gaiters
  • Power steering – fluid leaks, pipes, operation, warning lamp on electric systems
  • Steering column – excessive movement, universal joints, security
  • Steering lock – must not be able to engage while driving
  • Steering wheel – condition and security

Track rod ends

The most common steering failure by far. Track rod ends are cheap and quick to replace, but the wheel alignment must be reset afterwards or the tyres will wear rapidly.

Steering racks

A leaking hydraulic rack or a failed electric rack is the expensive steering failure. Reconditioned units are significantly cheaper than new. On older, low-value cars a rack can be the repair that tips the decision towards scrapping.

Questions people ask

Is a split steering rack gaiter an MOT fail?
Yes. A split or missing rack gaiter is a major defect because dirt and water will quickly damage the rack.
Does the power steering warning light fail the MOT?
Yes, on electric power steering systems a lit warning lamp is a major defect.
